How to fix Snapchat Memories with wrong dates or missing location

You downloaded your Snapchat Memories, put them in your photo app – and they’re all dated the same day, with no place on the map. Nothing is lost. Here’s why it happens and how to fix it for free.

Why the dates are wrong

Snapchat doesn’t write the date taken or the location into the photo and video files it exports. Your photo app can’t find a “date taken”, so it falls back to the file date – often the day you exported. The real details are kept in a separate list in the export, called memories_history.json (there’s also a web-page version in the HTML files). For each Memory it records the date and time it was captured, whether it’s a photo or video, and the location where Snapchat had one.

Other common problems

The easy fix (free, nothing uploaded)

  1. Check you have the list. Your export should include memories_history.json or the Memories web page. If it doesn’t, ask Snapchat for a new export with Export your Memories and Export JSON Files switched on – see how to download all your Snapchat Memories.
  2. Open Memories Fixer on a computer if you can (phones have less memory for big exports).
  3. Drop in all your Snapchat ZIP files – no need to unzip them – and press Fix my Memories.
  4. Save the fixed ZIP(s). Photos get the real date taken, time-zone offset and GPS location written in, with captions put back on. Videos get the real creation date and, where possible, the location. Every file is renamed by date (like 2024-01-15_182231.jpg), and a fix-report.csv lists what happened to each one.
  5. Add them to Google Photos, iCloud Photos or your computer. They should now sort into the right years.

Got your Snapchat ZIP file(s)? Put the real dates, locations and captions back – free, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.

It all runs inside your browser. Your files aren’t uploaded anywhere – see the privacy page. Keep your original Snapchat ZIPs until you’ve checked the results.

What it can’t do (yet)

Prefer to do it by hand?

You can: unzip the export, read the dates in memories_history.json, and write each one into the photo’s “date taken” (DateTimeOriginal) with a free tool such as ExifTool. It works, but it’s slow if you have hundreds or thousands of Memories. There are also free open-source desktop apps that do this job.
