Memories Fixer

Fix your Snapchat Memories export – free, and your files never leave your phone or computer

When you download your Memories from Snapchat, every photo and video is dated “today”, has no location, and captions or stickers come as separate see-through files. This tool puts the real date and place back and can stick the captions back on.

Why now? Snapchat says that from January 2027, Memories more than a year old that aren’t part of your oldest 5GB will be archived unless you pay for storage or download them. Read Snapchat’s help page. Download yours, then fix them here.

Fix my Memories

Drop your Snapchat ZIP file(s) here or tap to choose them. Add all the ZIPs Snapchat sent you (e.g. mydata~123.zip, mydata~123-2.zip …).

How to do it in 3 steps

    1. Ask Snapchat for your Memories. In the Snapchat app tap your profile picture → ⚙️ Settings → My Data (under Privacy Controls), or go to accounts.snapchat.com → My Data. Choose Export your Memories, tick Export JSON files if offered, pick All time and submit. Snapchat moves its menus around now and then, so the names may differ slightly.
    2. Download every ZIP. Snapchat emails you when it’s ready (often within a day, sometimes longer). Big collections come as several ZIP files – download them all, ideally on a computer with Wi-Fi. The links expire after a few days. You don’t need to unzip them.
    3. Drop all the ZIPs in the box above and press “Fix my Memories”. You’ll get back ZIP file(s) with your photos and videos named by date (like 2024-01-15_182231.jpg), with the real date, location and captions. Unzip them and add them to Google Photos, iCloud Photos or your computer.

    Good to know

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside this web page on your own device. There is no server that receives your files – you can even switch on aeroplane mode after the page has loaded and it still works. See the privacy page.

    What exactly gets fixed?

Photos (JPEG): date taken and time-zone offset, GPS location, and captions/stickers merged on. Videos (MP4): the creation date inside the video, and the location where possible. All files: renamed by date and given the right “date modified”, plus a fix-report.csv listing what happened to each file.

    What doesn’t it do (yet)?

It can’t burn captions into videos – that needs heavy video re-encoding, so the caption is saved next to the video as a picture with the same name. It doesn’t download old-style exports that only contain web links (your export must include the media files, which current Snapchat exports do). Chat media and Stories aren’t handled. If a memory has no matching entry in Snapchat’s list, we use the date in its file name and say so in the report.

How big an export can it handle?

It works through one file at a time and saves the results in parts, so several GB is usually fine on a computer. Phones (especially iPhones) have much less memory – if the page reloads or stops, use a computer, or pick smaller ZIP parts. On Chrome or Edge on a computer you can save straight into a folder, which is the most reliable for very large exports.

Which time zone are the dates in?

Snapchat records times in UTC. By default we convert them to this device’s time zone (for most UK users, UK time including summer time). Photos also carry the offset and a UTC GPS time stamp, so apps like Google Photos and Apple Photos can show them correctly. If you took photos abroad, the time shown is still UK time.
